SPARTA, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Georgia Bureau of Investigation says a traffic stop in Hancock County ended with a passenger in the vehicle shooting himself.
According to a GBI news release, Hancock County Sheriff’s deputies pulled over a vehicle on Fairmont Road around 6:15 p.m. Wednesday.
During the traffic stop, a passenger identified as 22-year old Dequane Rayshun Williams, got out the vehicle and approached a deputy who recognized Williams as having an active arrest warrant.
Williams fled on foot and a second deputy and Georgia State Patrol trooper chased him.
According to the GBI, Williams then pointed a pistol in the direction of one of the deputies. The GSP Trooper made brief physical contact with Williams, and Williams’ weapon discharged multiple times, striking Williams. He died on scene.
The GBI says the investigation indicates that no law enforcement officers fired their weapons during the incident, and Williams’ wounds are self-inflicted.
His body was taken to the GBI Crime Lab where final results of an autopsy are pending.
The GBI will conduct a thorough investigation and turn the case over to the Ocmulgee Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.
